Grace That Doesn’t Remove the Burden

One of our human instincts is assume that if God were really helping, the situation would change, the tension would ease, or the obstacle would move. Yet, we find in today’s readings a reminder that often what actually changes is us. While the deadline remains, the diagnosis remains, or the difficult conversation still waits, something inside is steadier, clearer, a less reactive.

There is a kind of grace that does not remove the burden but strengthens the one carrying it. We don’t always notice it because it seems almost too ordinary. It comes as restraint when you could have snapped, patience when you could have shut down, or courage when you would rather avoid. Strength in our soul is God’s subtle grace. It is his faithfulness meeting us in the middle, not just at the end.

Today’s practice - Fasting and Prayer:

Fast from complaining about one ongoing difficulty today. Each time you feel the urge to rehearse it aloud, pause and pray instead: “Lord, increase the strength of my soul.”

Let the withheld words become an offering to God.
